Under the latest Energy Saving Scheme (ESS) Rule changes, the window for creating Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs) for gas-fired equipment is officially shutting.
To be eligible to create incentives for these ending gas activities, all implementations must be completed and all ESCs fully registered by 30 June 2026.
What’s Changing?
From 1 July 2026, the following gas activities will be excluded from the Scheme:
-
- Gas-fired boilers (including steam and hot water boilers)
- Gas-boosted water heaters
- Gas space heaters
This move aligns with the broader NSW Government strategy to transition toward electrification and net-zero emissions.
While the scheme will continue to support high-efficiency electric alternatives (like heat pumps), the window to create incentives for gas-to-gas high-efficiency upgrades is closing.
What This Means for Your Business.
If you have clients currently quoted for gas-to-gas high-efficiency upgrades, the clock is ticking on the financial viability of those projects.
-
- Administrative Lead Times: The registration process involves auditing and compliance checks that can take weeks. Waiting until June to lodge paperwork could be too late and see the certificates (and the associated rebate) rejected.
- Inventory & Supply Chain: As the deadline nears, we expect a rush on high-efficiency gas units. Securing stock now ensures you aren’t caught out by late deliveries that push your completion date past the cutoff.
- Client Management: Now is the time to contact any clients with “on-hold” gas projects. Inform them that the rebate they were counting on will disappear in a matter of months.
