What are REGOs?

Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates are part of the Federal Government’s broader Guarantee of Origin scheme. They act as a mechanism to prove where and how renewable energy was created, allowing businesses to claim zero-emissions electricity consumption or prove the “green” status of secondary products.

REGOs vs LGCs.

REGOs will operate alongside LGCs, until the planned discontinuation of LGCs in 2030 when REGOs will completely supersede them.

REGOs are recorded with the time and date of the renewable energy they represent, giving organisations confidence in purchasing legitimate clean energy generation or storage.

Generation & Eligibility.

To be eligible to create REGOs, you must own or operate an eligible facility, including an accredited power station, electricity generation system, or energy storage system.

Eligible energy storage systems include:

    • battery
    • compressed gas
    • thermal
    • kinetic
    • gravitational
    • pumped hydro

REGOs can be created from the following renewable energy sources:

    • Hydro
    • Wind
    • Solar
    • Geothermal
    • Energy crops
    • Food and agricultural waste
    • Bagasse
    • Black liquor
    • Landfill and sewage gas

Monetisation vs Surrender.

Similar to LGCs and STCs, you can surrender REGOs to meet internal ESG goals, RE100 commitments, or mandatory Scope 2 emissions reporting.

FAQs.

REGOs are available right now for eligible projects, and have no end date, designed to operate well beyond 2030. LGCs end on 31 December 2030, at which time REGOs are the only applicable certificate for most large-scale projects.

REGOs and LGCs cannot be both claimed against the same unit of renewable energy or storage. Ecovantage’s certificate specialists will guide you on which to choose, based on your organisation’s financial and environmental goals.

The REGO market is in its infancy, with the only REGOs created (at the time of writing) are by Ecovantage. It is expected that the market will gain traction and volume across 2026 and into 2027.
