What is a Virtual Power Plant?
Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are an aggregated set of multiple home battery systems that are operated together to store energy and supply electricity into the grid.
For example, a group of townhouses have solar and batteries, and each generates and stores energy during the day. The batteries are all connected together and the energy company can draw down on that pooled electricity.
This means the solar and battery systems are acting as a power plant, feeding the grid as any other solar array, coal power station or wind power station would.
How to Choose a VPP.
Contact multiple VPP providers and compare their offers. Each provider will have different offers and conditions that you need to consider, such as:
- whether your battery is eligible
- what requirements the provider has
- the price per kW of electricity, known as ‘feed-in tariffs’
- any bonuses or upfront incentives for signing up
- the time of day they can access and draw down from the battery
- the minimum energy balance that will be left in your battery
- what’s in the fine print

Yes, there is finite amount on offer each calendar year and they are usually exhausted before the year ends. This amount of rebates available is based on the total number of Gigajoules each Activity Provider (such as Ecovantage) has under contract with obliged energy retailers.
As the rebate is only available once the system has been successfully installed, energised and connected to a VPP, it contributes to the total system cost, including both the battery and installation.
Yes, these are separate programs and you can benefit from both if you're in South Australia.
You can join a VPP at any time with an existing battery providing it meets the requirements at time of installation.
The rebate is only eligible to be claimed in the same calendar year the VPP is connected.
VPP operators are constantly updating their list of eligible batteries as more are setup with their control system. If yours is missing from the list, please reach out to us at info@ecovantage.com.au with the model number of your battery system and the VPP operator are onboarding with. Once we confirm its eligibility, we will update the list and be back in touch with you straight away.
Nominal Battery Capacity is the total amount of energy your battery system can store. You can find this on the compliance sticker, manual, or specification sheet for your system.
It is different from the Usable Capacity and is the larger of the two capacities.
