Australia’s Electric Vehicles Discount Bill Passed

As electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity, the government is introducing more incentives to support the reduction of petrol vehicle use in order to help decarbonise the transport sector.

According to the Australian Government’s ‘National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, in 2021, the transport sector was Australia’s third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 19% of all emissions.

Thanks to the Electric Car Discount Bill which was passed last week, you can now own an EV for the same cost as a comparable petrol model. Vehicles valued up to $84,916 are now eligible for this fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption. Requirements for this include having a new vehicle that hasn’t been used before July 2022. This program aims to save drivers around $3,000 – $5,000 per year.
